Remembering Our Unborn Babies

For the past several years the FertilityCare Center of the Upper Ohio Valley, Inc. and the Weirton Catholic Pro-Life Community has sponsored a Memorial Mass for Babies Who Died Before Birth. There is no distinction made as to whether the child was lost to miscarriage, abortion or ectopic pregnancy. These are all precious children who were unable to run and play and laugh on this Earth for God had greater plans for them with Him in Heaven!

These losses can be very difficult for the parents and families.

When someone you know suffers from infertility...

Although you may mean well, know that it is probably easier to hurt a woman who suffers from infertility by saying something than by saying nothing. Do not feel you have to give advice. If the right thing does not come to mind then simply listen with compassion. To say things such as “I am so sorry you are under going such pain” and acknowledging that you can’t imagine how difficult it must be to go through this will be appreciated.

Although every woman is different, a general rule of thumb for most women is to allow her to bring up the subject as she may or may not feel like talking about it at that moment or she may simply not want to talk about it with certain people and this should be respected.

Understanding the Suffering of Infertility

Although infertility has always been a problem, as seen in the Biblical stories of Hannah and Elizabeth, it has never been as widespread as it is now. A couple is medically defined asbeing infertile if they have not used any form of contraception and have not conceived over a period of 12 months or more. The path of infertility is a difficult one with much pain and suffering. It’s a path not well understood by those who haven’t traveled it. And, although both the man and woman suffer, the woman feels the pain in a piercing way unique to her gender.
